Where it came from
Humble Defector was originally introduced in the Fate Reforged set in 2015 before being reprinted as card number 667 in the 2020 Commander Legends expansion. The card was designed as a unique social political tool for multiplayer formats, mechanically rewarding players for collaborating while introducing a risk-reward dynamic that shifts control of the creature across the table.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Matt Stewart, who opted for a composition that emphasizes the subject's weary yet desperate expression. The design intends to visually convey the character’s act of shifting loyalty, capturing the essence of a defector seeking refuge while providing their new owner with the tactical advantage of drawing cards.
