Hunted Wumpus

Hunted Wumpus made its debut in the Mercadian Masques expansion in 1999, later appearing in the Eighth Edition core set in 2003 as card number 258. It was designed as a high-risk, high-reward creature, reflecting the high-power, low-cost design philosophy often utilized for green creatures during that era of the game. Its mechanics allow the caster to deploy a large threat quickly, provided they are willing to grant their opponent the same advantage.

The artwork for the card, illustrated by Daren Bader, captures the elusive and predatory nature of the creature within a dense, shadowed forest. Bader's depiction emphasizes the scale and intimidating presence of the Wumpus, helping to solidify its place in the game's iconography. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility choice, valued primarily in casual multiplayer formats where the drawback could be mitigated through table politics or specific deck-building strategies.
