Hydroblast

Hydroblast was first introduced in the Ice Age expansion of 1995, designed as a highly efficient defensive tool within the Magic: The Gathering color pie. Its purpose was to allow blue decks a way to interact with red spells and permanents, reflecting the color-aligned conflict that defined the game's early mechanical identity. By the time it was included in Eternal Masters in 2016, the card had cemented its status as a staple sideboard choice in Legacy and Pauper formats, valued for its versatility in addressing threats in a color that often struggled with direct removal.

The art featured in the Eternal Masters printing is the classic illustration by Christopher Rush, an artist whose contributions were foundational to the game's aesthetic. Rush’s original piece captured the elemental, volatile nature of the spell through stark, dramatic lines and iconic imagery. This specific version was received with significant nostalgia by the community, as it utilized the original artistic vision to bridge the gap between the game’s formative years and the more refined mechanical environment of the Eternal Masters set.
