Mindless Automaton

Mindless Automaton was originally released in the 1997 Exodus expansion, representing an era of Magic: The Gathering defined by high-risk, high-reward artifact creatures. Its reprinting in the 2016 Eternal Masters set served to provide players with a functional, color-agnostic card-draw engine specifically curated for the slower, more intricate draft environment of the Masters series. The card design highlights the game's shift toward balance and longevity, emphasizing how a utility piece can transition from an obscure 90s oddity into a reliable cornerstone of limited play.

The artwork for the Eternal Masters version was crafted by Ryan Yee, who sought to capture the cold, rhythmic nature of a construct devoid of consciousness. By utilizing a stark, mechanical aesthetic, Yee moved away from the more whimsical or erratic interpretations of early artifacts to focus on a design that feels purposeful and integrated into the game's expansive lore. The piece was well-received by the community for its clarity and thematic cohesion, fitting seamlessly into the aesthetic standards of modern sets while honoring the utilitarian identity of the original design.
