Where it came from
Hylda of the Icy Crown was released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set in September 2023, designed to serve as a centerpiece for the set's focus on tapping and ice-themed mechanics. The character, a member of the Frost Court of Eldraine, was conceived to weave Arthurian fantasy tropes with the icy, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the plane's expansion. This specific promotional iteration, numbered 206s, features unique border treatments consistent with the set's showcase frames, intended to emphasize the regal and cold nature of the monarch.
The card’s illustration was handled by artist Magali Villeneuve, who is well-regarded for her work on high-fantasy character portraits. Her visual approach for Hylda aimed to balance the character’s political authority with an intimidating, wintry presence, utilizing sharp lines and a palette of cool blues and whites. Upon its release, the card was received positively by the Commander format community, who quickly identified Hylda as a versatile leader for tap-centric deck strategies.
