Where it came from
Hyena Umbra was originally introduced in the Rise of the Eldrazi set in 2010, designed as an Aura enchantment to provide a creature with a defensive boost and the Totem Armor mechanic. This mechanic was introduced to help mitigate the inherent card disadvantage of playing Aura spells by allowing the enchantment to be destroyed instead of the creature it protects, providing a layer of resilience that was highly valued in both Limited and Constructed formats.
The Double Masters 2022 version, numbered 13 in the set, features updated art that maintains the thematic essence of the original while adhering to the set's aesthetic standards. As part of a reprint set focused on high-powered cards for competitive play, this version was included to provide players access to functional utility staples, and it was generally well-received by the community for its clean, efficient design and its contribution to durability in creature-based strategies.
