Where it came from
Hylda's Crown of Winter was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's focus on top-down fairy tale tropes, specifically referencing the character Hylda of the Icy Crown. Mechanically, the artifact was crafted to synergize with tap-based control strategies, reflecting the thematic chill and stasis associated with winter folklore within the game's high-fantasy setting.
The artwork for the card was commissioned from illustrator Ekaterina Burmak, who developed a visual language defined by icy textures and regal, ephemeral aesthetics. The design aimed to evoke the feeling of magical frost and winter sovereignty, matching the aesthetic standards of the Eldraine plane. Upon release, the card was received by players as a specialized tool for commander decks centered on tapping opponents' creatures, finding a firm place in niche, synergetic archetypes.
