Where it came from
Ill-Timed Explosion was released in early 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Murders at Karlov Manor. The set introduced a top-down design approach centered around a murder mystery theme set in the urban plane of Ravnica, with this card specifically designed to capture the chaotic, destructive nature of a magical investigation gone wrong.
The card was illustrated by artist Dominik Mayer, who utilized his signature sharp, architectural style to depict the sudden devastation. The design emphasizes the card's mechanical function—a board-clearing effect that scales with the mana spent—visually translating the concept of a magical blast through intense colors and crumbling structures, reflecting the set’s focus on high-stakes drama and noir-inspired tension.
