Where it came from
Ill-Timed Explosion was released as part of the promotional suite for the 2024 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Murders at Karlov Manor. The set draws heavy inspiration from classic noir and murder-mystery tropes, centering on a high-stakes investigation within the sprawling, ecumenopolis plane of Ravnica. This specific card serves as a board-clearing mechanic that reflects the chaotic, destructive nature of the set's central conspiracy.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a dramatic, high-contrast style typical of modern fantasy illustration to emphasize the sudden violence of the spell. As a promotional iteration, this version often features unique aesthetic treatments, such as special frames or foiling processes, intended to appeal to collectors focused on the thematic 'detective' aesthetic introduced in the set.
