Where it came from
Ill-Timed Explosion was released as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor set, a top-down design inspired by classic mystery tropes and detective fiction. The card serves as a board-clearing mechanic that reflects the chaotic, investigative nature of the set's narrative, where characters navigate political intrigue and magical mishaps within the gothic, urban landscape of Ravnica.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a dramatic, high-contrast style to capture the sudden, destructive energy of a magical detonation. The design was received as a functional staple for Commander and limited formats, praised for its ability to scale in power based on the mana spent, fitting seamlessly into the set's broader theme of explosive consequences within the Karlov Manor investigation.
