Where it came from
Illicit Masquerade was released in 2024 as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to reflect the set's central theme of a top-down mystery narrative set on the plane of Ravnica, where the mechanics were crafted to evoke elements of subterfuge, disguise, and hidden identities within a gothic, urban setting.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a dramatic, moody aesthetic to capture the essence of a clandestine gathering. The illustration emphasizes shadows and ornamental masks, aligning with the artistic direction for the set that aimed to blend traditional high-fantasy elements with the tropes of a noir detective story, ultimately serving as a functional piece within the set's broader mechanical suite of graveyard recursion and enchantment synergy.
