Where it came from
Illicit Masquerade was released as a promotional card for the Murders at Karlov Manor set, which debuted in early 2024. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, this specific version features unique foil treatments and extended or alternate art styles typical of promotional releases. The card reflects the set's central theme of mystery and intrigue, set within the Ravnica plane, where players act as detectives navigating a high-stakes conspiracy.
The art and design direction for the Murders at Karlov Manor promos were handled by Wizards of the Coast's internal creative teams and commissioned freelance illustrators to lean into the noir-inspired aesthetic of the set. The card functions as an enchantment that enables graveyard-based strategies, fitting the set's focus on investigative mechanics and hidden identities. It was distributed through various organized play initiatives, such as Friday Night Magic and pre-release events, to encourage community participation.
