Where it came from
The Illusion token, numbered 3 in the Forgotten Realms Commander Tokens set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in July 2021. Designed to accompany the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms expansion, these tokens were produced to provide physical representations of creatures created by various spells and abilities within the set, specifically referencing the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing franchise.
The art was commissioned to fit the aesthetic of the Dungeons & Dragons crossover, moving away from traditional high-fantasy Magic: The Gathering tropes toward the specific iconography of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. The token reflects the collaborative visual language established between the Magic art department and the D&D team to ensure that the creature's appearance aligned with existing monster manuals and lore established in the tabletop game.
