Where it came from
The Illusion // Saproling token was issued as part of the 2018 Friday Night Magic promotional series, a long-standing program by Wizards of the Coast designed to reward participants in weekly local game store events. These tokens are distributed as foils to encourage community play and provide collectors with alternate-art versions of the fundamental creature tokens used throughout the Magic: The Gathering card game.
The artwork for this specific token features a distinct, ethereal aesthetic common to the 2018 promotional cycle. Like many tokens produced for the Friday Night Magic series, it was designed to bridge the gap between utilitarian gameplay utility and collectible art. While the token does not bear the name of a singular iconic illustrator like some rare cards, its aesthetic reflects the established visual language of the game's broader set expansions, serving as a functional piece of cardboard that players frequently integrate into their decks to represent game states.
