Where it came from
The Merfolk // Treasure double-faced token was released as a promotional item for the Friday Night Magic series in 2018. These tokens were distributed to participants at local game stores to commemorate the weekly community events that serve as the backbone of organized play for Magic: The Gathering. As part of a series intended to replace traditional cardstock tokens, this release provided players with high-quality, functional accessories that added a layer of aesthetic polish to their tabletop experience.
The art features a stylized illustration that reflects the core identity of the Merfolk creature type while providing a clear visual distinction for the Treasure token on the reverse side. The design was crafted to meet the functional requirements of gameplay, ensuring that the token was easily recognizable across a playmat even in the chaotic environment of a tournament setting. It was received favorably by the community for its clean, modern aesthetic and the inclusion of a useful, frequently utilized game piece.
