Where it came from
Immoral Bargain was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander expansion, specifically featured within the Witherbloom Witchcraft deck. The card was designed to embody the aesthetic and mechanical identity of the Witherbloom college, which centers on the tension between life and death and the harvesting of biological essence. Its inclusion in a Commander-focused product reflects the intent to provide players with utility-based black mana cards that synergize with graveyard-reliant strategies.
The card’s illustration was crafted to evoke a sense of dark, academic occultism typical of the Strixhaven setting. By visualizing the cost of knowledge in terms of personal vitality, the design reinforces the thematic lore of the college, where students frequently trade their own health to unlock forbidden magical secrets. The card received a positive reception from the Commander community, who noted it as an efficient, low-cost way to manipulate one's own life total while simultaneously fueling graveyard-based resources.
