Immortal Coil

Immortal Coil was released in 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced the concept of 'shards,' representing five distinct planes of existence, each defined by three specific colors of magic. Immortal Coil is aligned with the Grixis shard, a world defined by decay, death, and ambition, which provided the thematic foundation for its morbid and complex mechanical design.

The card was illustrated by Dan Murayama Scott, who leaned into the Grixis aesthetic by depicting the artifact as a winding, skeletal construct imbued with necrotic energy. The design intent was to create a high-risk, high-reward card that required players to exile their own graveyards to prevent losing the game, reflecting the set's broader preoccupation with resource management and sacrifice. Upon release, it was noted primarily as a niche build-around card for casual formats due to the difficulty of managing its restrictive life-maintenance cost.
