Where it came from
Imodane's Recruiter // Train Troops is a double-faced card released in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Wilds of Eldraine. The set reimagined the plane of Eldraine, drawing heavily from classic fairy tales and Arthurian legends, infused with a whimsical yet slightly dark storybook aesthetic. This specific card was designed to highlight the set's mechanical focus on adventure and tactical battlefield deployment.
The card was illustrated by Ryan Pancoast, a prominent fantasy artist known for his evocative, painterly style. Pancoast was tasked with capturing the dual nature of the card—a recruiter mobilizing forces and the resulting troops being trained—while maintaining the thematic cohesion of the Eldraine world. Upon release, the card became a notable inclusion in red-based aggressive decks due to its efficiency and versatility in combat-oriented strategies.
