Where it came from
Imperial Seal was originally released as a judge promotional card in 2006, based on the functionally identical card from the 1999 Portal Three Kingdoms set. Its design reflects the strategic mechanics of the Portal series, providing a powerful search ability that places any card from a player's library onto the top of their deck at the cost of two life. The card is prized for its efficiency in high-power formats like Commander, serving as a staple for competitive deck builders who prioritize consistency.
The 2022 Double Masters version, illustrated by artist Wisnu Tan, was designed to provide a more accessible printing of a card that had become historically scarce and prohibitively expensive. By featuring it in a premium set focused on powerful reprints, Wizards of the Coast allowed a new generation of players to acquire a piece of Magic: The Gathering history. The updated artwork maintains the regal, commanding aesthetic associated with the original card while aligning with the sophisticated art direction of the modern double masters release.
