Where it came from
Imperial Seal was originally printed as a rare card in the 1999 Portal Three Kingdoms set, which was designed to introduce the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering to the Asian market by incorporating themes from Chinese history. Because of the set's limited distribution, the card remained notoriously difficult to acquire for over two decades, gaining legendary status among competitive players for its efficiency as a black tutor effect that searches the library for any card and places it on top.
The 2022 Double Masters reprint, featuring art by Wisnu Tan, was designed to satisfy long-standing demand for the card's accessibility in modern constructed formats. While the original Portal Three Kingdoms version is valued primarily by collectors for its historical scarcity, this version was received as a functional necessity for players, marking the first time the card had been widely available in a globally distributed set since its inception.
