Where it came from
In Search of Greatness was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Kaldheim. The card was designed for the green color identity, drawing inspiration from the Viking-themed mythology and folklore central to the set's narrative and aesthetic world-building. It functions as a powerful enchantment meant to facilitate the casting of high-mana creatures by rewarding players for building a board state of increasing power.
The card features illustration by artist Simon Dominic, who leaned into the icy, ethereal atmosphere of the Kaldheim plane. It was received by the player community as a strategic tool for Commander and other casual formats where players seek to accelerate their board development. While not a centerpiece of competitive tournament play, it remains a thematic staple for green-aligned decks that focus on creature-based synergy and scaling.
