Where it came from
In Search of Greatness was released as part of the Kaldheim set in early 2021, specifically featured as a promotional card. The card is designed to fit the top-down flavor of the expansion, which drew heavily from Norse mythology and the concept of destiny. It reflects the set's mechanical focus on mana value and permanent-based gameplay, rewarding players for carefully managing their board state to cheat high-cost threats into play.
The illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who utilized a moody, atmospheric style to capture the mystical nature of the card's effect. The art depicts a lone figure standing before a celestial gateway, emphasizing themes of transcendence and heroic potential. Upon its release, the card was widely analyzed by the Magic: The Gathering community for its potential in niche combo decks, though it remained a more specialized tool for casual and Commander formats rather than a staple in high-level competitive play.
