Provenance

Where it came from

The Insect token was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were produced to represent the creature manifestations created by specific cards within the set, such as 'Ulvenwald Mysteries,' which allows players to generate 1/1 green Insect creature tokens when non-token creatures they control die. The design reflects the gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad plane, focusing on the unsettling, twisted nature of the environment's infested wilderness.

The artwork for this specific token was created by Deruchenko Alexander. In keeping with the set's broader artistic direction, the illustration captures the skittering, plague-like essence of the creature, emphasizing dark, muted tones and a sense of unnatural growth. The token was widely distributed within booster packs, serving as a functional accessory for gameplay rather than a collectible chase piece, and it was received as a standard utility component for players utilizing green-based strategy decks.
