Where it came from
Increasing Devotion is a sorcery card first introduced in the Dark Ascension expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2012, later appearing as a reprint in the Phyrexia: All Will Be One Commander set. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the card reflects the aesthetic and mechanical themes of the Innistrad block, where the human population struggles against supernatural threats. The design centers on the flavor of holy reinforcements, utilizing the flash-back mechanic to allow players to cast the spell twice from the graveyard, symbolizing a persistent rally of soldiers.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Johannes Voss. His approach focuses on high-fantasy imagery, capturing the visual transition from a solitary prayer to a massive, spectral manifestation of white-mana warriors. Upon its initial release, the card was well-received by players focusing on token-based strategies, as it provided a reliable method for generating a wide board presence in the Commander format, where efficiency in mana-to-token conversion is highly valued.
