Where it came from
Incubation Sac was released in early 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card belongs to the faction-based aesthetic of New Phyrexia, a plane defined by biomechanical horror, cold industrialization, and the forced conversion of living beings into artifacts. It was designed to function within the set's mechanics, which emphasize the accumulation of oil counters and the proliferation of toxic threats to opponents.
The artwork, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, captures the grotesque and clinical nature of Phyrexian assimilation. Kieryluk’s design focuses on the visual language of gestation and corruption, utilizing a color palette of sickly greens and dark metallics to convey the unnatural growth of the Phyrexian horde. Upon release, the card was recognized by players primarily as a utility piece intended to support deck archetypes focused on synergy with artifact and creature recursion.
