Where it came from
Incubation // Incongruity is a split card featured in the Ravnica Allegiance set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. This card reflects the mechanics of the Simic Combine, one of the ten guilds on the plane of Ravnica, which focuses on the intersection of nature and experimentation. As a split card, it provides two distinct magical effects: Incubation, an instant that allows for card selection, and Incongruity, a sorcery that acts as creature removal by exiling a target and replacing it with a token.
The card's visual identity was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, whose work on the Ravnica set leaned into the bio-organic aesthetic characteristic of the Simic guild. The design balances the fluidity of biological research with the harsh utility of Ravnican law-making, mirroring the faction's thematic tension. Upon its release, the card saw immediate play in competitive Magic: The Gathering formats, particularly in Simic-aligned decks that valued its versatility in both finding threats and managing the battlefield.
