Where it came from
Infantry Shield was included in the 2017 Commander anthology release, specifically appearing within the Dragonstorm preconstructed deck. This set was designed to explore the flavor of the Tarkir plane, a world defined by its shifting timelines and warring dragon clans. As part of a supplemental product, the card served to bolster the defensive capabilities of red-aligned creature decks, reflecting the tactical gear utilized by the soldiers within the Mardu Horde.
The card features artwork commissioned to embody the aesthetic of the Tarkir setting, prioritizing rugged, utilitarian design that fits the brutalist sensibilities of the dragon-worshipping factions. It was received by players as a niche utility tool intended to provide creature protection in multiplayer formats. While not a cornerstone card of the meta, it represents the dedicated world-building efforts of the design team during the expansion of the Commander format's accessibility.
