Where it came from
Infantry Veteran was introduced in the Magic: The Gathering Classic Sixth Edition set, released in 1999. This core set marked a pivotal moment for the game, as it introduced significant rule changes that clarified combat and timing, setting the standard for how the game is played today. As a common card, it was designed to function as a fundamental building block for white-aligned decks, emphasizing the game's focus on structured combat and creature-based strategies.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators from the early years of the game. Rush's design leans into the classic high-fantasy aesthetic of the era, portraying the veteran as a steadfast, armored combatant. While the card is mechanically simple, its inclusion in the Sixth Edition helped solidify the visual identity of the game’s core sets during a period of rapid transition and growth for the franchise.
