Where it came from
Infantry Veteran was printed in the Ninth Edition core set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released in 2005. As a core set card, it was designed to provide foundational gameplay mechanics, serving as a common-rarity creature that emphasizes the white color identity's focus on structured combat and creature-based utility. It occupies a space in the game's history during a period where Wizards of the Coast shifted toward a biannual release schedule for core sets to ensure accessibility for newer players.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the early development of Magic: The Gathering. Rush’s design for the Infantry Veteran follows the traditional high-fantasy aesthetic of the era, focusing on a disciplined soldier to reflect the card's ability to boost the power of other attacking creatures. Upon release, the card was generally viewed as a functional utility piece for Limited formats, appreciated by players for its straightforward role in aggressive white decks.
