Where it came from
Infernal Grasp was released as part of the Marvel Universe trading card series, which saw wide distribution in the early 1990s. During this era, Marvel leaned into the dark, mystical corners of its mythos, and this card served to highlight the ominous power often associated with supernatural entities like Mephisto or Dormammu. It was designed to capture the visceral, high-stakes aesthetic that defined the comic book art style of the period, appealing to fans of the more occult-themed Marvel storylines.
The card’s illustration was crafted to evoke a sense of immediate danger, utilizing the dramatic lighting and exaggerated anatomy typical of 1990s superhero media. As a subset of the Marvel Universe collection, it was aimed at providing collectors with a deeper look at the antagonists that challenged iconic heroes. Upon its release, it was well-received by younger collectors who were drawn to the gritty, intense visual language that dominated the comic industry at the time.
