Provenance

Where it came from

The No Mercy card, numbered 68, is part of the 1990 Marvel Universe Series 1 trading card set produced by Impel. This inaugural set was instrumental in standardizing the modern collectible card market for comic properties, capturing the height of Marvel's late-80s and early-90s artistic transition. The series was designed to provide a comprehensive catalog of characters and iconic story moments, serving as both a reference guide for fans and a gateway for new readers during a period of significant comic book industry growth.

The imagery for the No Mercy card reflects the darker, more visceral editorial direction Marvel explored in the early 90s, focusing on intense conflicts between heroes and villains. The production team prioritized high-quality printing on glossy stock, utilizing original art that emphasized dramatic composition and bold color palettes. Upon release, the set was met with immense enthusiasm, quickly becoming a staple for hobbyists and helping establish the template for high-volume, character-focused trading card releases that would dominate the decade.
