Where it came from
Infernal Pet was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Kaldheim. The set draws heavy inspiration from Norse mythology, reinterpreting traditional fantasy tropes through a lens of icy landscapes, Viking culture, and planar cosmology. As a black-aligned creature card, the design focuses on the darker, death-focused aspects of the plane, depicting a skeletal, otherworldly feline companion that reflects the set's recurring themes of life, death, and reincarnation.
The artwork was illustrated by Games Workshop veteran artist Greg Staples. His approach emphasizes a visceral, dark fantasy aesthetic, utilizing moody lighting and intricate textures to emphasize the creature's supernatural, undead nature. The card was designed to function as a utility piece in limited play formats, and upon its release, it was well-received by players for its thematic cohesion and its mechanical synergy with the set's graveyard-recursion mechanics.
