Provenance

Where it came from

Infernal Medusa was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set is historically significant for being the first to introduce gold-bordered multicolored cards, which expanded the strategic complexity of the game. Designed during the early years of Wizards of the Coast, the set sought to build out the lore of the multiverse by introducing legendary characters and creatures, moving beyond the generic fantasy tropes found in the original base set.

The card features artwork by Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators whose distinctive style defined the dark, gritty aesthetic of early Magic. Maddocks' depiction of the Medusa emphasizes a somber, earthen quality that aligned with the set's experimental nature. While the card was considered mechanically weak by competitive players due to its high mana cost and restrictive ability, it remains a notable piece of Magic's formative history and a relic of the game's shift toward more intricate card mechanics.
