Where it came from
Infernal Offering was released in 2014 as part of the Commander 2014 set, a collection specifically engineered for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format. It was featured in the 'Sworn to Darkness' black preconstructed deck, which focused on graveyard recursion and sacrifice mechanics. The card was designed as a political tool, encouraging interaction between players by allowing an opponent to draw cards and return a creature from their graveyard to the battlefield in exchange for the caster destroying a creature and drawing cards themselves.
The artwork for the card was created by Deruchenko Alexander. The visual design emphasizes the dark, transactional nature of the spell, depicting a sinister ritual that balances life and death. Within the competitive community, the card is recognized for its high mana cost and its situational utility, often serving as a niche choice for decks that favor group hug or chaotic game states over purely efficient removal.
