Where it came from
The Infernal Spawn of Evil card was released as part of the Oversized League Prizes set, a series of promotional items distributed to participants in Magic: The Gathering organized play events during the late 1990s. These cards were notably produced at an enlarged scale, designed primarily as display pieces rather than for standard tournament gameplay, reflecting Wizards of the Coast's effort to reward local hobby shop communities.
The illustration was rendered by artist Mark Tedin, a longtime contributor to the game's early aesthetic. Tedin's work on this piece leans into the macabre, surreal creature design that characterized his earlier output, intended to evoke a sense of high-fantasy horror. At the time of release, these oversized versions were received as unique curiosities, marking a shift toward collectible memorabilia that moved beyond the functional constraints of the standard trading card format.
