Where it came from
Infernal Spawn of Evil was originally released in the 2004 Unhinged set as part of Wizards of the Coast's series of silver-bordered 'un-sets.' Designed by Mark Rosewater, these cards were created to explore comedic mechanics and breaking the conventional rules of Magic: The Gathering. The card was specifically designed to utilize a unique 'comes into play' mechanic involving the card's position in the hand, adding a layer of physical interaction that defines the humorous tone of the set.
The illustration by Greg Hildebrandt captures a classic, over-the-top demonic aesthetic that leans into the self-referential irony characteristic of the Un-series. While the card is not legal for tournament play, it has been reprinted in the 2020 Unsanctioned box set, which collected fan-favorite cards from previous silver-bordered releases. It remains a staple for casual players and collectors who appreciate the design experimentation and lighthearted spirit of the Un-sets.
