Where it came from
The Infinite Hourglass was released in 1997 as part of Magic: The Gathering's Fifth Edition, which served as a comprehensive core set consolidating cards from the game's earliest expansions. Like many cards of this era, the design reflects the experimental approach to artifact mechanics, intended to offer players a repeatable, if somewhat costly, means of board manipulation during a period when the game's rules were rapidly maturing.
The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, who contributed several pieces to the game during the mid-nineties. Her illustration leans into the classic fantasy aesthetic of the period, utilizing a literal interpretation of the titular object to evoke the theme of time manipulation, a concept that remained a frequent subject of artistic exploration within the early game's expansive fantasy world.
