Dark Ritual

Dark Ritual was originally printed in Alpha in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a staple of the black mana color identity. The card represents a core tenet of Magic: The Gathering's mechanical philosophy, offering a temporary burst of mana at the cost of card advantage. By the time of the Fifth Edition release in 1997, the card was already firmly established as an essential tool for fast-paced deck archetypes, serving as a fundamental engine for combo strategies throughout the game's early history.

The artwork for the Fifth Edition printing features the iconic illustration by Quinton Hoover. Known for his distinct, lyrical style, Hoover’s depiction of a robed figure channeling dark energy became synonymous with the card's visual identity for years. While later sets would reimagine the art, Hoover’s version is frequently cited by long-time collectors for its atmospheric quality, which captured the ominous and ephemeral nature of the spell as intended by the game’s original design team.
