Where it came from
Informed Inkwright was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set is themed around a magical university, with this specific card representing the Silverquill college, which emphasizes eloquence, rhetoric, and the manipulation of ink-based magic. It was designed to function within the set’s mechanics, specifically interacting with the 'lesson' and 'learn' systems that emphasize academic preparation.
The card features artwork by artist Jason A. Engle, who utilized a gothic-academic aesthetic to capture the essence of the Silverquill aesthetic—sharp, contrast-heavy, and evocative of ink-based conjuration. The design choice aimed to reflect the college's scholarly yet combative nature, and upon release, it was noted by players as a functional utility creature that fits the high-synergy playstyle common to the Strixhaven limited environment.
