Where it came from
Inspiration was released as part of the Visions expansion for Magic: The Gathering in early 1997. As one of the core sets in the Mirage block, Visions was designed to push the boundaries of mechanics and color identity, specifically focusing on card advantage and utility within the blue color spectrum. It served as a staple for deck builders who valued consistent draw power, reflecting the design philosophy of the era where efficient, low-cost utility spells were essential for shaping the game's competitive landscape.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the game's history. Rush was commissioned to capture the ethereal essence of the card’s title, utilizing a surrealist aesthetic that was characteristic of the mid-nineties aesthetic for the game. Upon its release, Inspiration was well-received by players for its straightforward, reliable functionality, quickly becoming a classic example of standard blue draw mechanics that would be reprinted and referenced in various iterations for years to come.
