Provenance

Where it came from

Man-o'-War was released in 1997 as part of the Visions expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to complement the preceding Mirage expansion, focusing on thematic depth and mechanics that rewarded tactical card advantage. The creature was intentionally designed as a common-rarity utility card to provide players with a versatile, low-cost way to tempo out their opponents by returning creatures to their owners' hands.

The artwork was commissioned from acclaimed comic book artist and illustrator Jon J Muth. Known for his atmospheric and painterly style, Muth was tasked with depicting the jellyfish-like entity within the game's high-fantasy aesthetic. The card became a staple in competitive play shortly after its release, praised by the community for its efficient design and the strategic flexibility it introduced to blue-aligned deck archetypes throughout the game's long-standing history.
