Where it came from
Inspiring Call was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set, a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format, this set brought the grimdark aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the trading card game's mechanics. The card itself features artwork by Games Workshop, maintaining the iconic visual language of the Imperial Guard, often referred to as the Astra Militarum, as they rally amidst the chaos of war.
The card is a reprint of a classic Magic: The Gathering spell, repurposed here to represent the 'Voice of Command' or a morale-boosting maneuver within the context of the Warhammer universe. Its design aims to capture the thematic resilience of human forces facing overwhelming cosmic threats. Upon its release, the set was well-received by both Magic players and Warhammer hobbyists for its successful fusion of two distinct, long-standing intellectual properties, with collectors specifically seeking out the surge foil variants for their unique holographic finish.
