Where it came from
Involuntary Cooldown was released in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War, which explores the historical conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra. The card serves as a thematic representation of the mechanical nature of the war, depicting the stasis or technical failure of an artifact, which aligns with the set's focus on antiquity, machinery, and the fallout of high-stakes magical warfare.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Caio Monteiro, who employed a clean, industrial aesthetic to emphasize the cold functionality of the machinery found in the Brothers' War setting. By focusing on the visual language of magical-technical inhibition, the design aims to convey the literal freezing of a creature or artifact, mirroring the broader design philosophy of the set that balances top-down historical narrative with functional gameplay mechanics.
