Where it came from
The Island card numbered 281 in the 'The Brothers' War' expansion was released by Wizards of the Coast in November 2022. The set functions as a narrative exploration of one of the most foundational conflicts in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, centering on the mechanical and ideological war between brothers Urza and Mishra. This particular land card serves as part of the basic land cycle designed to evoke the scorched, industrial, and artifact-heavy aesthetic that defines the set's retro-futuristic vision of Dominaria's history.
The illustration was created by artist Alayna Danner, who worked to harmonize the thematic bleakness of the conflict with the quintessential essence of an island. Her approach focused on capturing the serene yet somber beauty of the terrain within a world undergoing rapid, destructive technological advancement. The card was well-received by players for its atmospheric consistency, fitting seamlessly into the set’s broader artistic goal of reflecting the environmental decay caused by the brothers' incessant warring.
