Where it came from
Ivory Mask was originally introduced in the Mercadian Masques expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1999, later reprinted in the Ninth Edition core set as card 23. It was designed to provide players with a defensive tool, granting the controller hexproof from spells and abilities targeted by opponents. The card reflects the set's broader themes of political intrigue and identity, serving as a tactical measure to disrupt opponent strategies that rely on direct targeting.
The illustration for the Ninth Edition printing was created by artist Christopher Moeller. Known for his distinct style within the game's expansive art history, Moeller rendered the mask with an ethereal, haunting quality that aligns with the card's protective nature. Upon its release, the card was recognized by players as a niche but effective sideboard option, valued for its ability to invalidate entire archetypes of removal-heavy decks.
