Island

The Island card from the Ninth Edition Magic: The Gathering core set was released in 2005, serving as part of the game's shift toward using recurring art across sets to foster visual familiarity. This particular iteration, marked by the collector number 338, utilizes the distinct landscape illustration by John Avon. Avon, a legendary figure in the game's aesthetic history, designed the piece to evoke a sense of ethereal tranquility, utilizing his signature style of vibrant color palettes and soft, sweeping horizons that distinguish his land cards from the more utilitarian designs of earlier sets.

Ninth Edition was notable for being the first core set to feature card borders in the modern frame design, which had been introduced in the Eighth Edition. This transition was met with mixed reactions from long-time players who held nostalgia for the original, thinner border style, yet the art itself—including this Island—was widely praised for its high-quality reproduction and artistic merit. The set remains a staple for collectors who appreciate the transition period where the game's visual identity solidified into the polished, cinematic style seen in contemporary Magic today.
