Where it came from
Ivory Mask was originally released in the Mercadian Masques expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1999, later being reprinted in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005. Designed during an era when Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with complex passive protections, the card was intended to provide players with a rare form of strategic insurance against targeted discard and damage spells.
The illustration was rendered by artist Donato Giancola, who opted for a serene and ethereal aesthetic to match the card's function of granting personal immunity. While the card is often cited by players for its niche utility in sideboard strategies, it represents a classic design philosophy from the early 2000s that favored high-mana cost enchantments with definitive, game-altering static abilities.
