What it does
Jan Tomcani, from Bratislava in the Slovak Republic, came out of nowhere to stun everyone by posting a perfect 6—0 record in the Standard portion of this year's Worlds. Tomcani then proved that his run was no fluke by working his way up to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Alex Borteh in a close five-game match. Tomcani played a version of "Fires," the green-red deck that defined much of this year's metagame. Tomcani's version, which splashed black, follows the normal Fires archetype of playing cheap creatures followed by Fires of Yavimaya and big creatures like Blastoderm or Spiritmonger.

Where it came from
The 2001 World Championship Decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast as a tribute to the top performers at the Magic: The Gathering World Championship tournament. These decks were exact replicas of the cards used by the finalists, including their specific sideboard choices and deck compositions. This particular card, representing the bio for Jan Tomcani, serves as a biographical companion piece to his deck, which was built around the aggressive red-black archetype that defined the competitive meta of the era.
The design of the 2001 deck series featured a distinct gold-bordered card frame to distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards, a practice implemented to preserve the secondary market value of the original printings while allowing players to experience professional-level strategies. Jan Tomcani, a skilled player from the Czech Republic, earned his place in this set through his performance at the 2001 event in Toronto, where his deck selection highlighted the efficiency of the Invasion-Odyssey standard environment.
