Where it came from
The 2001 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a way for fans to play with exact replicas of the decks used by top competitors at the Magic: The Gathering World Championships. This specific Forest, bearing the collector number jt348, originated from the deck piloted by Jan Tomcani, a Czech player who competed in the tournament. These cards are visually distinct from standard set releases due to the gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures on the face of the cards, which were intended to commemorate the professional play environment rather than for use in sanctioned tournament events.
The design of this Forest card utilizes the foundational artwork by Rob Alexander, which originally appeared in the Invasion expansion. Alexander was a pivotal landscape illustrator for early Magic: The Gathering, known for his ability to convey atmospheric depth and natural beauty through a distinct, painterly style. In the context of the World Championship series, the inclusion of his classic land art served to anchor the professional-grade decks in the recognizable aesthetic of the game's core history, emphasizing the accessibility of elite-level strategies to the broader community.
