Where it came from
Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. This card represents a pivotal moment in the game's lore, depicting the Phyrexian praetor Jin-Gitaxias as he infiltrates the plane of Kamigawa. The set blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with a high-tech cyberpunk visual identity, reflecting a futuristic evolution of the original Kamigawa block from 2004.
The specific card featured here is part of the Neon Dynasty Promo series, distinguished by its unique 'neon ink' or extended-art treatments that emphasize the set's technological theme. The character design focuses on a biomechanical aesthetic, with art by Raymond Swanland, whose signature style emphasizes sharp, aggressive linework. Upon release, the card was widely discussed in competitive circles for its powerful ability to tax opponents' spells and duplicate one's own, solidifying its status as a sought-after card for both players and collectors.
